Explore Hamburg’s Jewish Quarter: learn about the lives of notable Hamburg residents and the city’s Jewish community. Discover the history of synagogues and the Talmud Torah school, as well as the culture and heritage of “Little Jerusalem”
We invite you on a fascinating tour of Hamburg's Jewish Quarter to discover the contributions of its famous residents - physicist Heinrich Hertz, composer Felix Mendelssohn, philanthropist Salomon Heine, cruise founder Albert Ballin and Nivea cream creator Oscar Troplowitz. All of them are Hamburgers, descendants of Sephardim and Ashkenazim, who, since the end of the 16th century, moved to Hamburg to escape persecution by the Catholic Church. On a three-hour excursion you will learn how their lives developed and what they did for the development of the city. During the walk, you will immerse yourself in the history of “little Jerusalem”, see the places where synagogues were located, destroyed during the Second World War, and get acquainted with the history of the Talmud Torah school. We will also visit the site where post-war trials took place, talk about the life of the Jewish community today and enjoy the atmosphere of one of the most beautiful areas of Hamburg.
